Opihi Gorge – 16 October 2021

On Saturday morning we all meet at Aorangi Stadium at 8am and then headed to the start of the Opihi track. The weather was good and once on with our gear we started the tramp by walking along the river edge. I spotted a trout and it was big!

We headed along the track which went very steep uphill to a clearing. We had a rest then afterwards we tramped back down to the river. The gorge was tight and we headed around big rocks – steps made of steel rod helped us around them. It was a lot of fun and also challenging. Then the track flattened out making for easy walking to a nice lunch break spot in the trees above the river – great spot.

The tramp back downstream was up and down and around bluffs. The uphill parts had rope attached to help us. We were back at the cars at 4pm, then on to Pleasant Point for refreshments – a great tramp – 13km all up. Catherine, Don, Judy, Colin, Wayne, John, Peter, Sandy, Tim, Barry and Catherine the trip leader.
