After meeting the station owners we set off, first crossing Avalanche Stream and then making a short steep climb to reach the 4WD track that goes to the top of the Rollesby
Range. Beginning at Burkes Pass this range runs south to Mackenzie Pass. As we rounded a corner near the top we were greeted with excellent views of the Dalgety Range and Grampian Mountains. Now facing west we also experienced the full strength of a cold nor’wester. Continuing upwards we reached the top of the range at around 1300m where there were ‘wow’ views of Mt Cook and the Southern Alps.
Three group members decided to return on the 4WD track while the rest, after having taken a refuelling stop, descended on a long ridge, at times pushing through tall snowgrass and avoiding spaniards. This took longer but made an interesting loop and we were back at our vehicles by 4.30 pm.
Participants were Don and Catherine Y, Donna, Neville, Graham, Joan, Paul, Lynley, Catherine T, Kate, Beatrice, Ken, Rob, Jane, and Dorothy
