Wainono Lagoon is a shallow lagoon on the coast near Waimate.  The Hook and Waihao Rivers flow into it so it is a fresh water lagoon despite being separated from the sea by just a few metres.  DOC has established the Wainono Lagoon Conservation Area to protect the natural environment of the lagoon which is important for its birdlife and native fish.  The track along the shingle bank between the lagoon and the sea begins at Hook Beach Road and takes 2.5 hours to walk one way.
