The hut has an interesting history. Originally a musterers hut, it burnt down in later years, but the corrugated iron from it was salvaged and reused to build the current hut.

The track to the hut starts from part-way up the Roundhill Skifield access road, is part of the Te Araroa Trail and is described by DoC as “steep”.

The walking time is 3 to 4 hours each way – so a good level of fitness will be required.
