Rangitata Gorge Sunday 29th June
Departing at 8am from Aorangi Park and after around an hour’s drive we arrived at the start at the Rangitata Diversion Race. Parking up in the large signed car park area we got out of the cars into a rather chilly wind and cool temperature. After putting on plenty of warm layers we set off following the poled track which followed through a public access easement onto the terraces. Following the Rangitata river through the gorge we had great views along the way. There was a very wintry look to the river below us with a higher river flow. I spent some time looking at the rapids and recollecting a rafting experience here. As we came through the gorge to the open flats and into the sunshine things were warming up. We walked on past a small hut across large grassy flats for another hour then finally settling on a small rise for lunch. Great views towards the Moorehouse Range and Brown Saddle. Retuning the same way. A great day out enjoyed by Judy, Colin, Katy, John, Christine, Owen, Catherine, Robert, Barry, Glen and Neville.
