Dry Acheron Sunday 15th April 2018
The forecast was great and 9 keen walkers departed for a good day out.
The Dry Acheron is a normally dry river but this trip we knew we were going to have wet feet.
After a short walk up a shelter belt we were greatful to finally arrive in the sun. We followed the Acheron River which is a small river about 2m wide, and enters some narrow gorges. Apparently we crossed it 35 times! It was very beautiful and we are lucky to have easements through farms to enable access across private land.
After a couple of hours we arrived at the junction of the track to Big Ben (nothing to do with time) and Conical Knoll. 5 carried on to the knoll, the others stopped for lunch.
We watched machinery extending a dam, presumably for stock water as we walked to the knoll. It was interesting for the water engineer in the party.
On the return trip the nor-wester was picking up and the cloud cover was increasing. Our timing was perfect.
