SUMMARY:Mt Somers (Summit): Day Trip
DESCRIPTION:Andrew is planning a trip to ascend to the top of the east face of Mt Somers – through the trees from the Staveley car park\, then via Hookey Knob\, the South Face track and the Summit Track.  From the top there should be good views over the surrounding countryside\, weather permitting.  The same route will be followed for the return. Departure time from Timaru will be between 7:30 and 8:00. \nNote that due to the likely conditions this trip has been rated as “Difficult”. Snow will be present\, and as it is likely to be slippery and icy higher up crampons and an ice axe will be essential. Those considering taking part will need to have crampon and ice axe experience\, and will need to discuss their suitability with Andrew beforehand. \nThere is a possibility of a shorter alternative trip – as above\, but excluding the Summit Track part – for those who would like something less demanding.  If this appeals to you please let Andrew know\, so the logistics can be worked out. \nGrade: Difficult\nOrganiser: Andrew (Text him on 027 9365040 and he will get back to you)\nPostponement Date: Sunday 2 July

SUMMARY:July Club Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Our monthly meeting will be held on Monday 10 July\, starting at 7:30 pm\, at our usual venue – Church Street Bible Chapel Hall\, corner Church Street and Avenue Road\, Timaru. \nAs well as a round-up of recent and upcoming trips we will view and discuss two videos from NZ Mountain Safety Council on river crossing and hypothermia. They will be quite timely\, as (1) we are hoping to have a practical river crossing course in spring\, and (2) if a river crossing doesn’t go as planned and somebody gets a dunking it could result in hypothermia. \nAll members\, as well as anybody else interested in the club or finding out what we get up to\, are welcome to attend.

SUMMARY:Mt Dobson (Dobson Peak): Day Trip - Postponed
DESCRIPTION:This trip has been postponed.  A new date (possibly sometime in August) will be advised as soon as possible. \nProviding landowner permission is obtained\, Andrew is planning a trip to walk to Dobson Peak. \nThe intention is to drive to the ski field (chains required)\, walk due west to the learner platter and onward up to a peak at 2064 metres\, then walk due north to Dobson Peak (2095 metres). From there\, continue around until ready to come back down to the car park\, then drive home. \nDue to the conditions likely to be encountered this trip has been rated as “Difficult”.  An ice axe will be required and crampons would also be desirable.  To find out more about this trip or to discuss your suitability please contact Andrew as below. \nIf landowner permission is forthcoming a trip to Ben Ohau is a likely alternative. \nGrade: Difficult\nOrganiser: Andrew (Text him on 027 9365040 and he will get back to you)

SUMMARY:Woolshed Creek (Mt Somers): Weekend Trip
DESCRIPTION:Hazel is organising a weekend trip to Woolshed Creek Hut for the weekend of 22 and 23 July.  The plan is to walk to the hut\, drop off your overnight gear\, walk further to the saddle\, then return to the hut for the night.  The next day will be a leisurely trip home – with\, no doubt\, a compulsory stop at the Mt Somers store for an ice-cream! \nNote that this hut is one of the two on the Mt Somers Circuit and must be booked\, so Hazel will need to have a good indication of numbers beforehand. \nFor more information please contact Hazel as below. \nGrade: Moderate\nOrganiser: Hazel 021 1705622
