SUMMARY:October Club Meeting
DESCRIPTION:“Map and Compass” will be the theme for this meeting.  An introductory session on this will be run by Andrew\, one of our members.  This will be the first of several sessions on this topic to be held over the next year or so.  The following information will give you an idea of what to expect: \nGood map reading is a skill that once learned is never lost\, just like riding a bike\, and we shall look at a few map reading sessions over the next year or so. In modern days we are becoming increasingly reliant on electronic devices for navigation\, however good map reading could become a life-saver if these devices should ever fail.\nWith these sessions I will try and encourage you all to investigate the wonderful world of reading maps\, and the joy it can bring when one is out in the countryside and you end up in the place you want to be by great map reading.\nOn the first meeting\, we will have an introduction to maps and compasses and using them together. We shall look at what a map is\, how to orientate it\, what a grid reference is and how to find this grid reference on the map. We shall have a look at compasses and what to look for with them. \nAssuming we are still at Covid-19 Alert Level 2 on 11 October\, the meeting will be held in the church building rather than the hall and we would encourage you all to wear a mask.  A sign-in form and hand sanitiser will be available. \n

SUMMARY:Opihi Gorge - Day Trip
DESCRIPTION:Catherine will be taking a trip through the gorge on the newly reopened track\, as has supplied the following information …\nThis walk is near Fairlie. It is 18.7 km following the Opihi river and into the gorge. There are wires and ropes to use to transverse down some parts. The track is narrow in places but stunning.\nTo make transport easier I am hoping to have two parties\, each starting at opposite ends of the track. The trip will take at least six hours\, so a good level of fitness will be required.\nIf you are interested contact me for further details. \nGrade: Moderate +\nContact: Catherine 027 7163518\nNote: This trip replaces the previously-advertised Maryburn Stream trip. \nUPDATE: This trip will now be an “out and back” trip from the Raincliff end\, due to some sections of the track being impassable.
