SUMMARY:Gunns Bush and Kelceys Bush: Day Trip
DESCRIPTION:Gunns Bush is located 10 km northwest of Waimate in the Hunters Hills area.  From the end of Gunns Bush Road the track through the native bush follows a stream and does a small loop before returning the same way.  In many places the forest floor is carpeted with green moss helping make this a short but enjoyable 5 kilometre walk taking about 1.5 hours. \nKelceys Bush is also just a few kilometres northwest of Waimate\, and about 5 km south of Gunns Bush. Two short walks are available here: one of about 20 minutes to a viewpoint\, and another of about 40 minutes following the creek up the valley to the site of the water intake for Waimate’s first water supply. \nGrade: Easy\nOrganiser: Dorothy 03 6881333

SUMMARY:May Club Meeting
DESCRIPTION:In May we will have a presentation of Paramo outdoor clothing\, by Nigel Barrett from Perspire Ridge.  Nigel has supplied the following information: \nMy name is Nigel Barrett.  I have recently formed a company called Perspire Ridge and am working on distributing Paramo outdoor performance clothing via retailers throughout NZ.  I would like to bring some samples of the product to one of your club nights and do a presentation on the product. \nParamo does not use membrane fabrics like Gore-Tex or eVent etc.\, but rather the Analogy fabric from Nikwax\, which has never been available in NZ before.  It’s a bit different in feel and how it’s worn so getting people to hold it and look over the samples is important. \nI started up the business and pursued Paramo because I saw that their product deals with perspiration in a unique way (“directionality”)\, and I happen to sweat so much I end up thoroughly saturated and cold when wearing my traditional raincoat.  Not that Paramo can stop me sweating\, but it does a good job of keeping me comfortable and managing the sweat better in my experience. \nThe presentation would not be a cheesy sales attempt – more of an introduction\, inform and demonstration of the fabric and product.  I will be selling through retailers in due course.  I will give a presentation of some of my and my family history in the hills\, run through a study in perspiration and its effects\, then look at rainwear and breathability. \nI only briefly introduce the products\, give a background on Paramo\, then finish up with some time for the attendees to look through the samples.

SUMMARY:Lake Daniell (Lewis Pass area): Weekend Trip
DESCRIPTION:They don’t get much easier than this! The longest part of this trip will be driving there and back. \nA nice\, easy\, almost completely flat walk (8.4 km\, 3 hours each way) to a lovely lake 5km east of Springs Junction. The rebuilt Manson-Nicholls Hut at the lake has 20 bunks and requires bookings – so speak to the trip organiser about this. \nYears ago (i.e in the Olden Days) there was a leaky rowboat there that you could paddle around in – though not too far from the shore! Needless to say\, the Health and Safety Police have probably put an end to that bit of fun. \nGrade: Easy\nOrganiser: Ben 027 3880671 (Text him and he will get back to you)

SUMMARY:Sharplin Falls and Pinnacles Hut Track (Mt Somers): Day Trip
DESCRIPTION:The track to Sharplin Falls re-opened last year after a lengthy period of closure. The idea for this trip is to go to the falls\, then follow that by walking along the track towards Pinnacles Hut for as far as we want to go\, before returning to the carpark and home. \nIt is about 2.4 km and 45 minutes each way to the falls\, and according to DoC it is 5.8 km and about 3.5 hours one way to the hut. How far we go will depend on the conditions on the day and the wishes of those present. \nGrade: Easy to Moderate\nOrganiser: Graham 6861651 or 021 08293331

SUMMARY:Casey Hut (Arthurs Pass National Park): Weekend Trip - Cancelled
DESCRIPTION:This trip was cancelled\, due to unfavourable weather conditions.  It will be run at another date (not yet set). \nCasey Hut is a 12 bunk serviced hut\, accessed from Andrews Shelter either by Andrews Stream and Casey Saddle or via Binser Saddle and the Poulter River. According to DoC it takes 6 to 8 hours to get to the hut via Andrews Stream\, so a good level of fitness will be required. The exact route taken will be decided on the day\, depending on the conditions at the time. \nThe hut was opened in 2020\, thanks to a generous donation by one of our Life Members\, and replaces one burnt down in 2015. Bookings are not required\, but as it is a “Serviced” hut\, the appropriate hut tickets or passes must be taken. \nBen and Barry are organising this trip\, so contact them as below for further information. As Ben works shifts it would be best to contact him by text\, and he will get back to you. \nGiven the nature of the area this trip will be weather-dependent\, so will only go ahead if conditions are favourable. \nGrade: Moderate to Fit\nOrganisers: Ben 027 3880671 / Barry 6885320 or 021 02689877
