SUMMARY:August Club Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Our monthly club meeting will be on Monday 9 August at the usual venue (Church Street Bible Chapel Hall\, corner Church Street and Avenue Road\, Timaru)\, starting at 7:30. All welcome! \nThis month it will be something a bit different. We want your photos of club trips and events\, so we can sort out some to use at the 50th anniversary next year and in a booklet being produced for the event. \nOur President\, John Hyland\, has sent through the following information which explains it all … \nHi Folks\, \nEvery month for the last couple of years I have been coming up with a guest speaker or idea for our monthly Club Meeting. This month we could possibly have a few more participants – you! Read on to see how you can help … \nWe have the SCTC 50th Anniversary coming up on 12th March next year\, and are hoping to have photos – old and new – shown on a large TV screen and just rolling over in the background at the event. To do this we need your photos. Remember those old prints and photo albums we used to have before the age of digital photography? Well\, now is the time to hunt them out\, blow the dust off them and bring them along to our August meeting next week! \nMy intention is for your photos and albums to be put out on tables for you all to wander round and look/laugh at. We are going to have it set up so photos can be electronically copied onto the club’s laptop. From there they will be put into a suitable format for use at the celebrations next year. A few people I have already spoken to are keen to bring their photos\, so dig yours out too – the more photos the merrier! \nWhether your photos are in albums\, old envelopes\, the original packets (like mine!) or on a computer or memory stick etc. – no worries! Just hunt them out\, bring whatever you have (regardless of the format) and we will be able to display them. We will have two laptops there. Seeing these photos may just rekindle some old memories and provide inspiration for places the club can venture to again! \nThere should be enough time between now and the meeting next Monday night for you to go through your cupboards/drawers/spare rooms/attics/hard drives etc. and unearth those old photos. Once you have found them\, dust them off\, reminisce\, have a chuckle about how young everybody looked and how fashions have changed\, rekindle your fond memories of trips and where you went – then bring them along to the meeting. No doubt there will also be a few good stories and anecdotes – so make sure Neville Guthrie gets to hear of them\, as he is in the process of producing a commemorative booklet for next year’s celebrations.\nSee you at the meeting! \nJohn Hyland (President)

SUMMARY:Mid-winter Club Weekend - Dunstan Downs (Lindis Pass area)
DESCRIPTION:Details of the club’s mid-winter get-together are now available. \nMany thanks to John\, our President\, for organising this event and supplying the following information … \nI have booked out the Dunstan Downs Backpackers accommodation for Saturday night 19th June 2021.  There are 17 beds available for us\, with linen and towels provided. \nDunstan Downs: You know\, that place when you are driving to Central Otago via the Lindis Pass\, out of Omarama towards the Ahuriri turn-off\, those shearers quarters buildings on the left?  Well\, that’s us for the night. \nThere are 4 or 5 cottages (with heaters)\, a common room and kitchen\, and an ablution block with a couple of showers.  The common room could be cramped\, but sociable.  We will be sharing the facilities with the grader driver who looks after the Lindis Pass road over winter – every winter this becomes his home away from home. \nWe will leave Timaru about 7:30 or 8 on the Saturday and drive a couple of hours or so to Dunstan Downs.  Once the fighting over the rooms has finished and we have settled in we will head to the hills – weather permitting. \nThe cost for accommodation and the evening meal will be $50.  Travel costs will be extra\, and will depend on the numbers attending. \nYou will need to bring your own liquid refreshments and nibbles of choice for the evening\, plus your lunches for both days and your breakfast for the Sunday. \nOn the Sunday we will head either to the hills again or to one of the remote historic cottages on the property – again\, all weather dependent. (Catherine and Barry are looking after that side of things.) \nIf you are interested please let me know as soon as possible\, so food etc. can be organised. \nGrade: Easy\nContact: John 6888536 (evenings) / 027 6734644 (phone or text)

SUMMARY:June Club Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Our June meeting will be held at our usual venue – Church Street Bible Chapel Hall\, corner Church Street and Avenue Road\, Timaru – starting at 7:30 pm.  All members and others interested in the club are welcome to attend. \nThis month we have a guest speaker: Renee\, from Timaru Booksellers. \nJohn\, our President has organised this and has supplied the following information … \nI am not a shopper/ browser of shops but one Saturday I was in town for a purpose (a purchase at Macpac).  I had parked at the top of the town and being a tramper I felt I was capable of walking down Stafford St. to a shop.  On my return journey I decided to treat myself to a coffee.  Beside the coffee shop I noticed this bookshop.   I had read about the owner and her new venture to open a shop in Timaru’s main street in a newspaper.\nI was greeted by Renee and I asked what books she had about cycling in NZ or NZ tramps.  I walked out the door with my purchase and got my coffee (good coffee shop\, by the way).  I perused my book while I enjoyed my coffee\, and then decided to go back to get a second copy to pass onto someone else.  Back at Timaru Booksellers I struck up a conversation with Renee\, and discovered that not only does she know about books but she also enjoys an adventure.  So come along to this month’s meeting and find out what Renee’s adventure was.

SUMMARY:Kakahu Bush (Raincliff area) - Day Trip
DESCRIPTION:This will be a Temuka Tramping Club trip\, run by Robert\, one of our members.  SCTC members are most welcome to take part in this trip. \nThe reserve was set aside in 1996 as an area of significant botanical and geological interest.  It has several unique and interesting geological features and is regarded as a site of national significance.  The plant life includes one of the largest lowland podocarp remnants in Canterbury.  Many species of birds are present\, and there are bats which are active at night.  In one part of the reserve\, in the early 1900s\, there was a sanitorium for tuberculosis patients. \nThe walking will be easy\, and the round trip takes about 3 hours. \nGrade: Easy \nContact: Robert 6846845

SUMMARY:Alps To Ocean Biking (Omarama to Benmore Dam) - Day Trip
DESCRIPTION:Colin will be taking a biking trip\, along the Omarama to Benmore Dam section of the Alps To Ocean Trail. \nThe plan is to meet at Omarama at 9:30 am\, then bike to Benmore Dam. \nThere are two parts to this trip – Omarama to Sailors Cutting (13 km) and Sailors Cutting to Benmore Dam (16 km). Both parts are on well-formed off-road tracks. The first part is easy going. The second part (a new section opened just before Christmas) takes you around parts of Lake Benmore not visible from the road and takes a bit more effort (including a couple of hill climbs that will sap your energy!) – but the views make it all worthwhile. \nIf you are interested in this trip contact Colin to find out the exact starting place. \nIf you want to stay somewhere in the area the night before this trip\, speak to Colin about the options available. \nThis trip will be the day after a trip along another section of the Alps to Ocean Trail\, so you will be able to combine the two rides if you wish. \nGrade: Moderate to Moderate +\nContact: Colin 6860995 / 0272496470

SUMMARY:February Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Our February meeting\, which would ordinarily have taken place on Monday 8th\, has been postponed by two weeks to Monday 22nd due to clashing with the Waitangi Day long weekend. \nPresident John (“PJ” to those who know him well enough!)\, has sussed out some interesting short walks at Temuka and will be our guide for the evening. \nMeet by the Temuka Police Station at 6:45 pm.  Those wanting to share transport from Timaru should meet at the Aorangi Stadium Morgans Road carpark at 6:15. \nApparently there is a Frisbee Golf course in the area of the walks\, so bring along something circular and unbreakable you can throw if you want to have a go at this as well.  According to PJ\, all bribes will be accepted!  With the nights starting to draw in a bit torches and/or headlamps may also be required. \nIf the weather really looks doubtful on the night contact John (688 8536 / 027 673 4644) or Graham (686 1651 / 021 082 93331) between 5:30 and 6:00 to see if it is still on. \nGrade: Easy!

SUMMARY:Cameron Hut (Lake Heron area) - Two Trip Options: Two Day or Three Day Trip
DESCRIPTION:This hut is nestled beneath some very big peaks and is near the Arrowsmith Range.  It is said to offer some spectacular alpine scenery.  Two trips are on offer – one of two days and the other of three days\, as detailed below.  Both trips start on the Saturday of the Waitangi Day long weekend. \nCameron River + South Ashburton [Hakatere]\nDate: 6-8 February [Waitangi weekend]\nGrade: Medium/Hard\nContact: Wayne 027 920 6638 or Barry 021 0268 9877 \nThere are two trips and two parties involved:\n(1)  One party goes into the Cameron Hut near Lake Heron on Saturday the 6th and comes out the same way on the 7th.  Grade: Moderate.\n(2)  The second party also goes into the Cameron Hut for the first night on the 6th but crosses over into the South Ashburton on the 7th and comes out on Monday the 8th via the Cameron.  Grade: Hard \nIntentions:  Leaving Timaru at 7am on Saturday the 6th Feb and walking into the Cameron Hut via the Cameron River.  Staying at the Cameron Hut for the first night\, a Canterbury Mountaineering Club hut with a fee of $10 per person per night.  The hut is sited in a unique glacial moraine basin that resembles a moonscape and there are spectacular views of the Arrowsmith Range out of the hut’s picture window.  On day two both parties start by walking back down the Cameron.  One party walks right out to the vehicles and goes home.  The second party walks part way back down the Cameron\, then climbs up an unmarked route up an unnamed small side creek on the true right that leads to a saddle with a creek that drops down to the South Ashburton opposite an ex musterers hut (now owned by DOC and called Top Hut).  Night two at Top Hut.  On day three there is a short walk down the South Ashburton then a climb up an unmarked route over another saddle that drops us back into the Cameron and then out to the vehicles.  Approximately 7 hours per day. \nNote:  As this is a long weekend there will likely be several parties at the Cameron Hut so we will carry tents. Top Hut is more off the beaten track and is not expected to be as popular.  Also note that in this area there is matagouri and spaniard around\, so high gaiters are preferable to low ones if you have them.
