SUMMARY:French Ridge Hut - Weekend Trip - Cancelled
DESCRIPTION:NOTE: This trip has been cancelled\, due to an unfavourable weather forecast.  It is hoped that the trip can be run later in the year\, possibly over the summer months.  A revised date will be notified as soon as possible. \nFrench Ridge Hut is operated by NZ Alpine Club and is located above the West Matukituki Valley\, west of Wanaka.  The hut sits at 1480 metres\, just below the summer snowline (1500 m at this location)\, is located in a sub-alpine zone and offers spectacular views.  It is accessed by a track described by DoC as steep and “challenging”.  Hut fees are $40 per head per night\, payable to NZAC. \nThe route to the hut starts at the Raspberry Creek carpark in the West Matukituki Valley.  The valley floor is followed for 3.5 to 4 hours to Pearl Flat.  After crossing the river (ford or swing bridge) it is another 2.5 to 3.5 hours up the steep ridge track to reach the hut.  This section of the track can be treacherous if conditions are either windy\, wet or snowy\, so the trip will not take place unless conditions are suitable.  (Ben\, the trip organiser will be checking with DoC in Wanaka beforehand so that an informed decision can be made on this.)  From the carpark to the hut the walking distance is 16.2 km. \nAt this stage exact travelling details have not been finalised.  However\, it is likely that those taking will depart Timaru late afternoon or early evening on Friday 9 May\, camp overnight at Raspberry Flat\, then walk up the valley and to the hut the next day.  After one night at the hut the next day will be spent returning to Raspberry Flat then home. \nThis trip will take you to a very scenic area and take you through a variety of terrain – river flats\, bush and a steep ridge.  It will be suitable only for those with sufficient ability\, fitness and experience of the conditions likely to be encountered.  If you are considering this trip you need to contact the organiser\, Ben\, to find out more information and discuss your suitability. \nGrade: Difficult \nOrganiser: Ben  027 3880671

SUMMARY:Oamaru Skyline Walk - Day Trip
DESCRIPTION:As this was such a popular trip last year\, Wayne has decided to run it again this year.\nHere’s what Wayne wrote about it last time … \nThe Oamaru skyline walk is an easy-moderate two-part 1/2 day walk that starts below the skyline ridge behind the Waitaki Girls School at the northern end of Oamaru. \nIt starts with a short uphill street walk which leads into open grassland\, then sidles through a patch of native bush before dropping down to a small creek behind the Janet Frame House. It then continues up beside the creek\, past a locally famous quarry of geological interest\, and then up through a pine plantation to another grassland ridge. Good views of Oamaru and the port are seen from an unusually high perspective. From here the walk takes us past an astronomical observatory\, while below us we have views of an historical water wheel used for flour milling. This could be a good lunch spot for a future visit. We then drop down into the Botanical Gardens and follow the Oamaru Stream\, passing under an historical stone bridge and seeing parts of Oamaru that are not usually seen. Soon we arrive at the beach and see the Council’s new and impressive wooden suspension bridge over the stream. A short diversion lets us see the buildings that were the original ‘freezing works’ near the port of Oamaru. \nNow behind the historic Oamaru Victorian Precinct\, we then move along the waterfront before climbing up the hill track behind the port to a lookout point. From here we move into an area that was recently a pine plantation but now has lots of native plantings\, and we get to inspect some concrete gun emplacements. There are plenty of walking tracks and cycle tracks in this area.\nAt the end of the walk we drop back down the hill and can visit the penguin viewing area. Also\, if they are co-operative on the day\, view seals and pups snoozing safely just metres away over a fence.\nA short walk back along the waterfront to the car takes us past numerous noticeboards explaining the history of the Port of Oamaru.\nTime: About 4 hours. \nGrade: Easy\nContact: Wayne 027 9206638

SUMMARY:Opihi Gorge - Day Trip
DESCRIPTION:Catherine will be taking a trip through the gorge on the newly reopened track\, as has supplied the following information …\nThis walk is near Fairlie. It is 18.7 km following the Opihi river and into the gorge. There are wires and ropes to use to transverse down some parts. The track is narrow in places but stunning.\nTo make transport easier I am hoping to have two parties\, each starting at opposite ends of the track. The trip will take at least six hours\, so a good level of fitness will be required.\nIf you are interested contact me for further details. \nGrade: Moderate +\nContact: Catherine 027 7163518\nNote: This trip replaces the previously-advertised Maryburn Stream trip. \nUPDATE: This trip will now be an “out and back” trip from the Raincliff end\, due to some sections of the track being impassable.

SUMMARY:October Club Meeting
DESCRIPTION:“Map and Compass” will be the theme for this meeting.  An introductory session on this will be run by Andrew\, one of our members.  This will be the first of several sessions on this topic to be held over the next year or so.  The following information will give you an idea of what to expect: \nGood map reading is a skill that once learned is never lost\, just like riding a bike\, and we shall look at a few map reading sessions over the next year or so. In modern days we are becoming increasingly reliant on electronic devices for navigation\, however good map reading could become a life-saver if these devices should ever fail.\nWith these sessions I will try and encourage you all to investigate the wonderful world of reading maps\, and the joy it can bring when one is out in the countryside and you end up in the place you want to be by great map reading.\nOn the first meeting\, we will have an introduction to maps and compasses and using them together. We shall look at what a map is\, how to orientate it\, what a grid reference is and how to find this grid reference on the map. We shall have a look at compasses and what to look for with them. \nAssuming we are still at Covid-19 Alert Level 2 on 11 October\, the meeting will be held in the church building rather than the hall and we would encourage you all to wear a mask.  A sign-in form and hand sanitiser will be available. \n

SUMMARY:September Club Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Please note that this meeting will not be in the hall\, but in the church building immediately adjacent to the hall. \nOur monthly meeting will be held on Monday 13 September\, commencing at 7:30 pm. \nWe have a guest speaker\, Fraser Munro\, who will talk about the new trail between Washdyke and Pleasant Point.  This may be followed by photos of a recent trip\, time-permitting. \nRecently your committee has been deliberating whether or not we could go ahead with meetings given the current Alert Level 2 Covid-19 restrictions\, and came to the conclusion that meetings could go ahead\, but with some changes. \n\nWe will meet in the same location (corner of Church Street and Avenue Road\, Timaru)\, but in the church building not the hall. This will allow us extra space so we can maintain the recommended separation. The church building is immediately adjacent to the hall.\nPlease wear a mask.\nHand sanitiser will be available at the entry – please use.\nA form will be present at the entry for you to sign-in.\nPlease maintain the recommended separation (2 metres) from people you do not know.\nSupper is “off the menu” for the time-being.

SUMMARY:August Club Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Our monthly club meeting will be on Monday 9 August at the usual venue (Church Street Bible Chapel Hall\, corner Church Street and Avenue Road\, Timaru)\, starting at 7:30. All welcome! \nThis month it will be something a bit different. We want your photos of club trips and events\, so we can sort out some to use at the 50th anniversary next year and in a booklet being produced for the event. \nOur President\, John Hyland\, has sent through the following information which explains it all … \nHi Folks\, \nEvery month for the last couple of years I have been coming up with a guest speaker or idea for our monthly Club Meeting. This month we could possibly have a few more participants – you! Read on to see how you can help … \nWe have the SCTC 50th Anniversary coming up on 12th March next year\, and are hoping to have photos – old and new – shown on a large TV screen and just rolling over in the background at the event. To do this we need your photos. Remember those old prints and photo albums we used to have before the age of digital photography? Well\, now is the time to hunt them out\, blow the dust off them and bring them along to our August meeting next week! \nMy intention is for your photos and albums to be put out on tables for you all to wander round and look/laugh at. We are going to have it set up so photos can be electronically copied onto the club’s laptop. From there they will be put into a suitable format for use at the celebrations next year. A few people I have already spoken to are keen to bring their photos\, so dig yours out too – the more photos the merrier! \nWhether your photos are in albums\, old envelopes\, the original packets (like mine!) or on a computer or memory stick etc. – no worries! Just hunt them out\, bring whatever you have (regardless of the format) and we will be able to display them. We will have two laptops there. Seeing these photos may just rekindle some old memories and provide inspiration for places the club can venture to again! \nThere should be enough time between now and the meeting next Monday night for you to go through your cupboards/drawers/spare rooms/attics/hard drives etc. and unearth those old photos. Once you have found them\, dust them off\, reminisce\, have a chuckle about how young everybody looked and how fashions have changed\, rekindle your fond memories of trips and where you went – then bring them along to the meeting. No doubt there will also be a few good stories and anecdotes – so make sure Neville Guthrie gets to hear of them\, as he is in the process of producing a commemorative booklet for next year’s celebrations.\nSee you at the meeting! \nJohn Hyland (President)
