SUMMARY:Wilberforce River area - Multi-day Trip
DESCRIPTION:Christine and David will jointly run this trip\, and have given the following outline of their plans …\nDeparting from Timaru early morning on Friday 20th January (in one or two vehicles\, depending on numbers going)\, we will meet up with David at Windwhistle. Once any surplus vehicles have been safely parked we will head up the Wilberforce in convoy\, driving upriver to approximately opposite the Moa Hut. The actual distance able to be driven will\, of course\, depend on the river and track conditions at the time. From there the intention is to go into the Unknown Stream area and spend a couple of day’s exploring the valley\, then return to the vehicles and drive out on Monday 23 January.\nUnknown Hut has six bunks\, but we will also carry tents.\nFor those with good fitness and experience there is an alternative way to return to the vehicles – climb up to Moa Saddle\, tramp through to Moa Stream Hut\, stay the night there\, then walk down Moa Stream and back to the vehicles.\nAt this stage we have two 4WD vehicles available\, but it would be good to have one more if possible.\nNumbers will be limited for this trip\, so if you are interested please contact Christine or David as soon as possible.\nNote that due to the nature of this trip it will only go ahead if weather and river conditions are looking favourable.\nGrade: Moderate to Difficult\nContact: Christine 021 1276964 or David 027 6863550

SUMMARY:Mt Harper (Ashburton Lakes area) - Day Trip
DESCRIPTION:Mt Harper is in the Ashburton Lakes area\, to the south of Lake Clearwater\, and can be accessed from Lakes Camp\, Emma or Roundabout.  Its summit is 1829 metres\, so from the starting point there is an ascent of around 1200 metres.  The plan is to drive as close as possible\, then ascend either via the north face or the ridge (depending on conditions).  The return will either be by the same route or via the western side and Balmacaan Saddle (again\, depending on conditions).  A moderate level of fitness will be required for this trip. \nNote:  If the weather conditions on the day mean it is unsuitable to be on Mt Harper it is possible that Mt Barrosa (in the Ashburton Gorge area) could be an alternative destination.  If neither option is suitable the trip will probably be postponed until a later date. \nLeader: Andrew  027 9365040 (Text him on 027 9365040 if you are interested in this trip and he will get back to you.)\nGrade: Moderate \nFurther information:\nhttps://www.doc.govt.nz/parks-and-recreation/things-to-do/hunting/where-to-hunt/canterbury/mid-and-south-canterbury-hunting/where-to-hunt/mount-harper-mahaanui/ \nMt Harper Circuit\, Hakatere Conservation Park\, Canterbury NZ

SUMMARY:Mt Barrosa - Day Trip
DESCRIPTION:Mount Barrosa (1364 m) is in the Hakatere Conservation area.  It is in the Ashburton Gorge area\, a few kilometres west of Mt Somers.\nThe track starts on private land and slowly climbs up a grassy valley; then there is a more steady climb following a fence line and a poled route to the top.  From the summit you get good views of farmland\, Mt Somers\, the Arrowsmith Range and the Ashburton Lakes. The return route is back down the same way.\nThe walk is 3.5 km each way.  It will give your legs a good work-out and is not “just a walk in the park”.  A good level of fitness will be required. \nLeader: Catherine\nGrade: Moderate+\nMap reference: Topo Map BX19

SUMMARY:Lake Hood (Kayaking) - Day Trip - Postponed
DESCRIPTION:NOTE: This trip has been postponed.  It is likely to take place early in 2023\, though a date has not yet been set. \nColin will be taking this outing\, and has supplied the following information … \nIntroduction to Sea Kayaking \nLimited numbers of kayaks and lifejackets are available – so first-come\, first-served.  If you have your own kayak please bring it.  I can transport your kayak\, provided you bring it to my place at least one day before event.  If you don’t have a kayak\, the cost for kayak and equipment hire is  $20/person. \nWhat to wear:  Wool or polypropylene.  No cotton\, as this gets cold when wet.  Wear layers as when tramping\, but pay attention to the underarm area as this is where chaffing occurs.  Bring a light wind breaker\, and wear water shoes (or soft shoes if desired). \nWhat to bring:  Hat\, sunscreen\, lip balm\, sunglasses (water reflects sunlight)\, bottle or two of water\, lunch and snacks.  Also bring a small amount of money – as a café stop maybe required!  A towel and a change of cloths would be advisable\, as you may be wet by the end of the trip.  Bring a life jacket if you have a suitable one.  (Note: Kayaking life jackets are shorter in the body\, due to the seating position.) \nLeader: Colin \nNote:  If the weather is unsuitable on 12/11\,the postponement date is 13/11. \n

SUMMARY:"Ocean To Alps" Biking - Oamaru To Duntroon - Day Trip - Postponed
DESCRIPTION:THIS TRIP HAS BEEN POSTPONED.  IT WILL BE HELD LATER IN THE YEAR.  THE NEW DATE WILLBE ADVISED AS SOON AS IT HAS BEEN DECIDED. \nYou’ve heard of the “Alps to Ocean” bike trail.  Over the last few years the club has completed all (or almost all) of its sections.  Well\, now it’s time to start doing it the other way round and see how things look going that way! \nStaring at the usual finishing point (Oamaru waterfront) we will bike 54 km to Duntroon.  The ride will take us through a variety of scenery – towns\, gardens\, farmland\, roads\, open country – with a mixture of flat bits and hilly sections.  Given the distance\, a reasonable level of bike-fitness will be required – unless you will be on an e-bike! \nThis will bean all-day event\, with some time taken shuttling vehicles at the start and finish.

SUMMARY:Coastal Walk: Timaru South - Day Trip - Postponed until 30/7/22
DESCRIPTION:Postponed until  Saturday 30 July. \nDorothy  has kindly offered to take a walk along a section of the coast not often explored\, just a bit south of Timaru\, and has supplied the following information: \nBeginning at Ellis Road and walking south\, a well-worn path follows along the edge of a farmer’s paddock until the railway line is reached. The path continues\, alternating between beach and cliff-top walking\, to near Pareora.  Views over farmland to the mountains on the western side and the rolling sea on the other make this an enjoyable walk – on a fine day.  As it is exposed\, to have a calm and sunny day is most desirable\, so if the forecast is not good the walk can be rescheduled for a later date.\nTime: 3 to 4 hours return.\nGrade: Easy\nLeader: Dorothy 03 688 1333 \nMany of you are probably familiar with the track south of Timaru to the lighthouse.  This  walk will give you a chance to wander further down the coast\, so please contact Dorothy if you would like to put your name down or would like to know more about it. \nNote: The start time may change\, depending on the conditions on the day.
