SUMMARY:Mt Somers (Summit): Day Trip
DESCRIPTION:Andrew is planning a trip to ascend to the top of the east face of Mt Somers – through the trees from the Staveley car park\, then via Hookey Knob\, the South Face track and the Summit Track.  From the top there should be good views over the surrounding countryside\, weather permitting.  The same route will be followed for the return. Departure time from Timaru will be between 7:30 and 8:00. \nNote that due to the likely conditions this trip has been rated as “Difficult”. Snow will be present\, and as it is likely to be slippery and icy higher up crampons and an ice axe will be essential. Those considering taking part will need to have crampon and ice axe experience\, and will need to discuss their suitability with Andrew beforehand. \nThere is a possibility of a shorter alternative trip – as above\, but excluding the Summit Track part – for those who would like something less demanding.  If this appeals to you please let Andrew know\, so the logistics can be worked out. \nGrade: Difficult\nOrganiser: Andrew (Text him on 027 9365040 and he will get back to you)\nPostponement Date: Sunday 2 July

SUMMARY:Winter Weekend: Glen Mary Ski Club Lodge - Lake Ohau
DESCRIPTION:For our mid-winter do this year we have been fortunate to be able to have the use of the Glen Mary Ski Club lodge\, situated beside Lake Ohau\, roughly halfway between Ohau village and Lake Ohau Lodge.  This is the last weekend the lodge was available before the ski season starts. \nJohn is coordinating the plans for this weekend\, ably assisted by Veronika\, and will be making sure that the lodge is all warmed up and ready to go on the Friday\, so you can travel up on either the Friday or the Saturday – whatever suits you better. \nThe lodge is well set-up\, with beds\, electricity\, ovens\, fridges\, open fire\, hot showers and flush toilets – all the comforts of home\, so what more could you ask for in the middle of winter? \nThere are plenty of options available for short (or long) walks in the area (e.g. a circuit track behind the lodge\, Temple Stream\, Freehold Creek\, Te Araroa Trail / Alps to Ocean Trail\, Hopkins River).  Also\, you could try swimming in the lake (yeah\, right!) or sampling the local café life at the lodge up the road. \nJohn will arrange the catering for the Saturday night evening meal. This will be some sort of meat dish with vegetables (Surprise a la John!)\, followed by a dessert with hot custard. (If meat isn’t to your liking\, please let John know.)  If you will be travelling up on the Friday bring your own evening meal\, which you will be able to heat up at the lodge if necessary. \nWhat to bring:\n• Your own breakfast\, lunch\, nibbles and drinks\n• Warm sleeping bag\n• Warm layers of clothing\n• Raincoat\, boots etc.\n• If travelling up on the Friday: your evening meal (can be heated on site if required)\n• A sense of humour\n• Some good yarns \nCosts:\nAccommodation – $25 per person per night (Preferably paid in cash to John before you leave for home on the Sunday\, as our club will pay the ski club directly)\nFood (Saturday night’s meal) – $10 to $15 per head approximately (To be confirmed when we know the numbers attending.)\nTransport – Approximately $40 per head if sharing transport (Based on 400 km return trip\, $0.50 per km\, 5 people per vehicle) \nIf you do an internet search you will be able to find some photos and other information about the lodge. \nGrade: “Easy-as / Laid back”\nOrganiser: John  027 6734644  (If you are interested in joining in or would like further information please text John and he will get back to you.)

SUMMARY:June Club Meeting
DESCRIPTION:This will be at our usual venue (Church Street Bible Chapel Hall\, corner Church Street and Avenue Road\, Timaru)\, starting at 7:30 pm. \nThis month we will have a guest speaker – Geoff\, who was a very active member of our club in its early days.  He is also a very keen photographer\, has a huge collection of slides and digital images\, and put together an audio-visual presentation for the club’s 25th anniversary.  This was screened again at our 50th anniversary last year and will be shown again at our June meeting – so if you weren’t at the 50th you’ll be able to see it this time round.  He’ll also be telling us a bit about the club in its early days. \nAll members and potential members welcome!

SUMMARY:Spurs Hut (Fairlie area): Day Trip - New Date: Sunday 11 June
DESCRIPTION:NOTE:  This trip has been brought forward\, from Saturday 17 June to Sunday 11 June. \nThis quaint hut is a relic from the mustering days\, but has had a makeover in recent years. It is nestled beneath a hill in a wide valley near Fox Peak and is a great place to walk to for lunch. \nWalking time is about 2.5 hours each way\, starting at the DoC carpark beside the Fox Peak Skifield access road. \nGrade: Easy to Moderate \nContact: Send a text to Andrew (027 9365040) if you are interested in this trip. SUMMARY:Claremont Bush: Weeding and Walking Afternoon
DESCRIPTION:Following-on from the talk we had at our May club meeting\, where we heard about the activities of the Friends of Claremont Bush\, those present agreed that it would be a good idea for the club to help with their weeding programme. \nWe have offered to help out on the afternoon of Saturday 10 June.  As well as helping with weeding you will also be able to walk the circuit track through the area.  Bring suitable tools with you (e.g. secateurs\, loppers\, grubber\, spade etc.) and possibly a container for collecting the weeds. \nSo that we have an indication of numbers\, please give Hazel\, a call on 021 1705622 if you will be coming along.  We will most likely meet at Aorangi Stadium at 1:00 pm and travel from there.

SUMMARY:Manuka Hut (Ashburton Lakes area): Weekend Trip
DESCRIPTION:Catherine is organising this trip and has sent through the following information … \nManuka Hut\, Hakatere Conservation Area\, May 27 and 28th\, Topo map BX 19\, Grade moderate. \nI plan to start our walk from Lake Heron car park\, walking past Double Hut and onto Manuka Hut -approximately 12 km in total.  As this is on the Te Arora trail we will need to take tents as it can be quite popular at times. The walk is out in the open and has good views of Lake Heron and surrounding country.  If you are interested contact trip organiser\, Catherine\, on 0277163518.

SUMMARY:Huxley Forks: Two-day Trip
DESCRIPTION:Here is what is planned for this trip …\nLeave Timaru around 7 am on Tuesday the 9th. Drive to Lake Ohau and leave the vehicle at the start of the Hopkins valley.\nFrom the vehicle it will be an easy walk up to Monument Hut\, for a (perhaps!) slightly early lunch and a cuppa\, before carrying on up to the swing bridge over the Huxley River and then on up to the hut – around a 5 hour walk in total at “cruising/good yarning” speed. It’s around an 18 km walk from the road end to the hut\, but it’s all basically flat walking. There aren’t really any river crossings except for the odd small side stream – so it should be a mostly “dry boots event”!\nStay the night at the hut\, then a quiet walk back out the same way the next morning. Ben is really looking forward to seeing the hut\, as the last one had to be rebuilt after he was there as a 14 year old!\nOn the way home a compulsory stop for ice cream or coffee in either Tekapo or Fairlie will be enforced!\nNote that as this trip will be weather dependent Ben will be in touch with those interested to keep them updated on conditions. \nHut Fees: $5 per person\, or one blue (Standard) DoC hut ticket\, or Annual Hut Pass\nGrade: Moderate\nOrganiser: Ben 027 3880671 \nGrade: Moderate

SUMMARY:May Club Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Our meeting for this month will be on Monday 8 May\, at our usual venue – Church Street Bible Chapel Hall\, corner Church Street and Avenue Road\, Timaru – starting at 7:30 pm. All members and anyone else interested in finding out what the club is up to are welcome to attend. \nThis month Rose\, from Friends of Claremont Bush\, will be coming along to tell us about Claremont Bush. There is a possibility that club members could assist with the weeding programme in operation there\, so this is something we can discuss. \nThere will also be plenty of time for a general chit-chat on what you would like to see the club getting up to (e.g. trips\, meetings\, social events etc.) so come along and have your say!

DESCRIPTION:A day trip to Sefton Biv (there and back from Mt Cook village) has been scheduled for Saturday 22 April.  Although a day trip\, the plan is to travel to the Whitehorse camping area at Mt Cook on the Friday evening and camp there that night\, to allow for an early start the next morning.  Travel back to Timaru would be on the Saturday evening. \nA high level of fitness and experience (and a good head for heights!) will be required for this trip. \nThis trip will obviously be weather-dependent\, so the final decision on whether or not it goes ahead as planned may not be made until sometime on the Friday. \nPlease contact the trip organiser\, Barry\, to find out more about this trip. \nGrade: Hard\nLeader: Barry 6885320 / 021 02689877

SUMMARY:February Club Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Our monthly meetings will kick-off for the year on Monday 13 February. Taking advantage of the nice long evenings and mild weather we will go for a walk round Claremont Bush\, rather than meeting at the hall. Start time will be 7:30 pm. The track is short and easy\, so this will be a good way to ease yourself back into things. The weather looks as though it will be kind to us\, but if you are unsure ring or text 021 08293331 to check. \nDirections: Go right up Fairview Road and turn left onto Holme Station Road. Follow this down the zig-zag and take the first right (Claremont Bush Road). The carpark and track entrance is about 1 km along the road. \nFor those wanting to share transport I suggest you meet at the Aorangi Stadium carpark on Morgans Road at 7:00 and sort it out amongst yourselves.

SUMMARY:Wilberforce River area - Multi-day Trip
DESCRIPTION:Christine and David will jointly run this trip\, and have given the following outline of their plans …\nDeparting from Timaru early morning on Friday 20th January (in one or two vehicles\, depending on numbers going)\, we will meet up with David at Windwhistle. Once any surplus vehicles have been safely parked we will head up the Wilberforce in convoy\, driving upriver to approximately opposite the Moa Hut. The actual distance able to be driven will\, of course\, depend on the river and track conditions at the time. From there the intention is to go into the Unknown Stream area and spend a couple of day’s exploring the valley\, then return to the vehicles and drive out on Monday 23 January.\nUnknown Hut has six bunks\, but we will also carry tents.\nFor those with good fitness and experience there is an alternative way to return to the vehicles – climb up to Moa Saddle\, tramp through to Moa Stream Hut\, stay the night there\, then walk down Moa Stream and back to the vehicles.\nAt this stage we have two 4WD vehicles available\, but it would be good to have one more if possible.\nNumbers will be limited for this trip\, so if you are interested please contact Christine or David as soon as possible.\nNote that due to the nature of this trip it will only go ahead if weather and river conditions are looking favourable.\nGrade: Moderate to Difficult\nContact: Christine 021 1276964 or David 027 6863550

SUMMARY:Mt Harper (Ashburton Lakes area) - Day Trip
DESCRIPTION:Mt Harper is in the Ashburton Lakes area\, to the south of Lake Clearwater\, and can be accessed from Lakes Camp\, Emma or Roundabout.  Its summit is 1829 metres\, so from the starting point there is an ascent of around 1200 metres.  The plan is to drive as close as possible\, then ascend either via the north face or the ridge (depending on conditions).  The return will either be by the same route or via the western side and Balmacaan Saddle (again\, depending on conditions).  A moderate level of fitness will be required for this trip. \nNote:  If the weather conditions on the day mean it is unsuitable to be on Mt Harper it is possible that Mt Barrosa (in the Ashburton Gorge area) could be an alternative destination.  If neither option is suitable the trip will probably be postponed until a later date. \nLeader: Andrew  027 9365040 (Text him on 027 9365040 if you are interested in this trip and he will get back to you.)\nGrade: Moderate \nFurther information:\nhttps://www.doc.govt.nz/parks-and-recreation/things-to-do/hunting/where-to-hunt/canterbury/mid-and-south-canterbury-hunting/where-to-hunt/mount-harper-mahaanui/ \nMt Harper Circuit\, Hakatere Conservation Park\, Canterbury NZ

SUMMARY:Mt Barrosa - Day Trip
DESCRIPTION:Mount Barrosa (1364 m) is in the Hakatere Conservation area.  It is in the Ashburton Gorge area\, a few kilometres west of Mt Somers.\nThe track starts on private land and slowly climbs up a grassy valley; then there is a more steady climb following a fence line and a poled route to the top.  From the summit you get good views of farmland\, Mt Somers\, the Arrowsmith Range and the Ashburton Lakes. The return route is back down the same way.\nThe walk is 3.5 km each way.  It will give your legs a good work-out and is not “just a walk in the park”.  A good level of fitness will be required. \nLeader: Catherine\nGrade: Moderate+\nMap reference: Topo Map BX19
