January Trips

Freehold Creek - Lake Dum-bell                   27th – 28th January

Grade: Moderate  

Starting at Freehold Creek we start in beech forest  climbing and are soon out in the open gaining good views . We travel pass a tarn and climb up a ridge then sidle along to Lake Dumb-bell. 

We will either camp here or camp back down beside the tarns. (Depending on the weather and the group). Lake Dumb-bell is 1557 m so it will be a steady trip as we will be carrying tents.

April Trips

Mt Nimrod and onto new conservation Area                                                                  Sat 3 March    

Grade: Mod -Fit


Starting in the Nimrod Scenic Bush Reserve we walk up to the junction  and then veer off following the marked poles on to the easement along a 4wd track gaining good views of South Canterbury and surrounding hills then we will climb up Mt Nimrod. This will be a full days walking of around 8 hours.

Mt Guy                                                Saturday 10th February      

Grade: Easy/moderate


This is a popular poled track which climbs to the summit of Mt Guy 1319m. Great views across Lake Clearwater and mountains beyond.

Mt Edwards                                         Saturday 24th February   

Grade: Moderate/climb


Details to follow Mt Edward is 1916m with height gained at 1236 m to summit. We will start at Sawdon Station Dead Man’s Creek. We will follow the rigde at the Right to the summit then return down the left Ridge. We will need to carry plenty of water as there wont be any!  Approximately 6-7 hours.    Plan is to depart Timaru at 7am.

Oxford Forest Park                         Saturday 10th March   

Grade: Easy

Ryde Falls track. This will be an aprox. a 5 hour walk.

 Big Peel                                           Saturday 17th March

Grade: Fit

Starting early from Blandswood we will walk up Lt Mt Peel and continue along the ridge to middle Mt Peel then further along to Big Mt Peel. This will be a full days walk of approx. 9-10 hours. You will need to take plenty of water. If you are keen.

South Opuha                                               27 - 28 January


Grade: Moderate to Hard               Map BY 17 [new]  I 37 [old]


A trip into the new South Opuha hut built by the Mackenzie Alpine Trust in 2012. It has 6 bunks, pots and pans, plates etc. A log fire. You only need sleeping bags and food. If our group exceeds 6, we will take tents as you cannot book the hut. There is no set fee for the hut, they take donations.  We will drive up a 4wd track for 8km and tramp from there via Sugar Loaf. Hoping to summit if it’s fine. So we are taking the long way to the hut, and will take at least 8hrs depending on the party. There is no formed track....!!

Sundays walk out is a half day.

We will meet at Louise Wynn’s on Stoneleigh Rd, Fairlie.  There is a charge of $20 per vehicle that the Tiffen’s donate to St Johns Ambulance.

Harmon Pass - Taipo            30 March – 2nd April (Easter)     

Grade: Fit

Planning for this Easter weekend is underway. This will be a 4 day trip. Day 1 Klondyke corner to Carrington Hut, day 2 over Harmon Pass to Julia Hut, day 3 to Dillon Hut, day 4 out to road. Please express if interested as soon as possible.

Geraldine to Andrews Stream Bike                29th April


Grade: MTB

This ride will start at Geraldine and follow roads to Andrew Stream. All up around 60kms for trip. Reasonable bike fitness required.

Grade: Easy/Moderate

This is a great day trip. Starting at the Woolshed Creek car park walk in to the woolshed creek hut then return by the bus stop. Some  interesting features and a varied circuit walk.

Otamatakou  Scenic Reserve                            Sat 19 May  

Grade easy

Topo Mao CA15

This walk starts off SH 83 opposite Lake Benmore. The walk follows Glen Creek through some farmland for 5.5km till we reach the reserve which contains remnants of native shrubs. Once we reach the reserve we will assess if we wish to go further. We will return the same way.

June Trips

Mid-Year  Xmas Twizel.                    15th  to 17th  June


I have secured a 3 bedroom, 6 bed warm house in Twizel for the weekend. Other beds are available nearby for the overflow at a fellow club member’s batch. For anyone who misses out on the bed, the lounge floor will be warm and comfortable. It is now winter and weather is unpredictable. Nothing is set in concrete. We will take the days as it comes.

We leave Timaru around 6pm on the Friday. You will be picked up from your house. The plan is for a day trip on the Saturday. Returning to a warm Winters  Hearty meal and social evening.

Sunday, a morning walk, Back to the house for lunch, spring clean and away. Planning to have you home by 5pm.
