September Trips

Otamatapaio Track (20km)                  6th – 7th September

Grade: Moderate

Starting at Otamatapaio River which is not far from
Sailors cutting. The first 8km is up river bed then we
follow a marked track which heads inland to our destination
Otamatapaio Hut (4 bunks). This track is in the Oteake
conservation park. We will leave reasonably early as it will
be approx 6-7 hours walking and as daylight hours are short.

Mt Sunday and Mt Guy                         Sunday 14th September

Grade:     Easy

Day trip to the upper Ashburton, Lake Clearwater firstly to Mount Sunday approximately 2 hour walk then to Mount Guy  a three hour walk.  Involves a bit of a climb and lots of great views.

Lake Guyon                                           19th – 22nd September        

Grade: Medium/Fit


Departing Friday and spend the night in Hamner. On Saturday we will walk over Mailing Pass (1308m) and stay at Lake Guyon. Sunday exploring Lake Guyon area - circumnavigate the lake or climb the hill. Either stay at Lake Guyon or the historic hut 1 hour further on. Monday return to car via Fowler Pass (1296m). Possibly a stop at the hot pools before returning to Timaru.  Cost should be no more than $120 per person.

October Trips

GHOST & GOLD TRAILS                       30th Sept – 4th October


Stephen and Leo are coming up to Timaru on 26 or 27 Sept to do Mt Somers 28-30 Sept before we go over to the Buller area with Rob on 1 Oct - a walk up to the Bucklands Peak Hut and the Charming Creek walkway before we start the Ghost trail on 5 Oct - out on 10 Oct, drive back to Timaru 11 Oct.  Club members are very welcome to join for any or all of the trips - we could do a car swap for the Ghost Trail? Te Araroa  Clent Hills From Rakaia to Lake Heron 25th – 27th October           

Grade.   Medium/Fit

A third go at this trip staying at Comyns and Double huts en route. Very weather dependent, and much of the trail is designated as a ‘route’, with Turton’s and Clent Hills Saddles to be negotiated, so the trip is graded as medium/fit.

Rees Dart                                                      9th – 15th November

Grade: Medium/Fit


The Rees-Dart Track is a 4-5 day tramping circuit which follows the Rees River and the Dart River, through leasehold farmland and the southern part of Mount Aspiring National Park.

It is a moderately demanding tramp, and most days average 6-8 hours of walking. Spectacular mountain scenery, forest and alpine vegetation, rivers and the Dart Glacier are all significant features of the walk.

We will stay 2 nights in the Dart Hut to allow time for a walk to Cascade Saddle.

November Trips

Jacks Hill Mount Algidus                             6th – 7th December Grade: Moderate /Hard


To get to the planned camp site it will be necessary to cross the Rakaia and Mathias Rivers so this trip is very weather dependent. Jacks Hill is 2191 metres and lies between the Mistake and Chimera Creeks in the Rolleston Range on Mount Algidus Station. We will drive to the Mauka Point Station Garage up the South side of the Rakaia River and walk from there.

December Trips

North Temple Track                        12th October

Grade. Easy

North Branch Temple Steam. Cross North Temple Stream and follow the track up the North Temple Valley. The track keeps to the beech forest margin and ends up at an impressive cirque basin. Returning the same way.

Fairlie Basin Day Trip.                           Saturday 1 November
We will travel out to Blue Mountain Station on Lochaber Road. We will tramp in the Totara Stream area visiting the historic Totara Spur stone hut. We may give it a tidy up if needed!  Weather and time permitting we will climb Mt Catherine.

Coal Hill    Saturday                            20th  December

Grade: Moderate  (Topo Map J36)

Not too far off our own back door step sits Coal Hill bordering on the MT Peel (Waikari Hills Conservation Area). Coal Hill is 1617m. We start on a public access easement, cross some paddocks then climb steeply up the eastern face of coal Hill to public conservation land. It is approx. 3 hours to the summit where we should have good views as we gain height.

Fox Peak and North Opuha Hut.                   4th - 5th October
Grade Moderate
Louise is leading this trip with the Methven Club and would like to invite SC members along. We will climb Sherwood Ranges highest peak near Fairlie. Fox Peak 2330m. This will be on the
 Saturday. We drive to the ski field car park. Allow 3hr for the climb.
Sunday we walk to the Spurs hut in the North Opuha - 2hours 30min walk one way.
Grade Easy
Accommodation will be at the Fox Peak Lodge just below the skifield. $25pp

Christmas Diner                                    Monday 8th December

In place of the usual club meeting we will have an evening meal at Robbies Restaurant at Washdyke. Time is set for 6.30pm. Christmas set menu ($32.00 per person - 3 course) optional.

MTB Geraldine Bike Track Orari River       30th November

Mountain bike track approximately 30kms. Riding is along the Orari River stop bank with some sections of single track. Easy flat riding. Track crosses the river by the Orari bridge and returns down the other side. Start and finish is at the Vance Road Car park.
