Tribulation Hut  (Redcliffe Conservation Area)   

 Grade: Moderate                                 17th - 18th January  
Topo Map BX20 and BW20
Redcliffe Conservation area is part of the Mount Hutt Range just south of Rakaia river. It also adjoins Hakatere Conservation Park at Mount Hutt. Tribulation Hut is a 3-4 walk from Double Hill Road. We will be walking up Redcliffe stream to conservation land and continue onto Tribulation Hut. This is a basic 6 bunk hut by Swift river. There will be chance to explore the area a bit more while there.

Preliminary program

Saturday. Head to Great Barrier Island.

Sunday –Tuesday Kayak the area

Wed-Friday Tramp

Saturday or Sunday return.

Costs Auckland- Great Barrier $90 via ferry return but need to stay over and travel to Auckland

Harbour

Fly from airport Costs $240 return but limited to 15 kg in small packages.

Kayak hire $70/day for double.

Huts require booking and payment. Camping on beach camp grounds while kayaking.

March Trips

The Branches - Skippers and Lochnagar      4th - 8th March 2015


On the 4th we will travel to the Branches Station where we will stay the night in the shearer’s quarters.

Next day we drive to the Sixteen mile hut do some exploring and stay the night.

Friday the 6th we put our packs on and head for Locknagar where we stay the night, some of us in tents.

Saturday we make our way back to sixteen mile hut hopefully do some exploring on the way.

Sunday we make our way home

Jacks Hill Mount Algidus                       24th - 25th January  

Grade: Moderate /Hard

To get to the planned camp site it will be necessary to cross the Rakaia and Mathias Rivers so this trip is very weather dependent. Jacks Hill is 2191 metres and lies between the Mistake and Chimera Creeks in the Rolleston Range on Mount Algidus Station. We will drive to the Mauka Point Station Garage up the South side of the Rakaia River and walk from there.

Cameron Hut (Makarora Area)      Easter - 3rd to 6th April

Grade: Moderate

Plan is to drive down on Friday and stay at the Makarora Camping Ground Backpackers.  We will start at the Cameron Valley track and climb through a series of small bluffs and sidle around a gorge the descend across a slip to the river before we re-enter the forest and continue down the south branch coming out onto a grassy flat to the 4 bunk Cameron Hut. We explore more on Sunday and return to the Cameron hut for the second night. On Monday returning back out the same way to the car.

January Trips

Light House to Lighthouse Evening Walk                                                                Monday 12th January

In place of our regular monthly meeting we will have an evening walk.  We will meet at 6.15pm at the car park at the tennis courts Benvenue Avenue. A vehicle/vehicles will be relocated to the other end of walk at Jacks Point.

February Trips

Huxley - Brodrick Hut          Waitangi weekend  6th – 8th February Grade Moderate

Huxley valley branches off Hopkins valley which is at the end of Lake Ohau Road. We will walk into the Brodrick hut.

 Big Mt Peel                                             Sat 10th Jan 

(Grade Fit)
It will be an early start as this will be a long day’s walk.
Starting from Blandswood end walking up Little Mount Peel then
continuing along the ridge past Middle Mount Peel and onto Big
Mount Peel. (Approx. 9 - 10 hrs walking). We should have good
views of the surrounding area .
A great opportunity to get back into it after the Christmas
festivities.

April Trips

Fox Peak                                     28th February - 1st March


We have been invited to join the Methven Tramping Club for their trip to Fox Peak. We will climb Fox Peak on Sat,Moderate to Hard. Then stay in the Fox Peak Lodge on Sat night. On Sunday will be an easy day out to the North Opuha, visiting the Spurs Hut.

Mount Wintersloe                          Sunday 12th April 2015

Grade: Moderate

Mount Wintersloe is situated just north of Mount Somers. The planned route is to go up from Staverly to Dukes Knob, through the bush and ten up the ridge to the summit. This is a longish day’s tramp.

Camp Sream Hut                              Sunday 26th April  

Grade: Moderate 
Camp Stream hut and return as day walk. This is a part of the Te Araroa Trail and on the two thumb range starting from the Lake Tekapo end.
